Top 5 Most Important Stories of 2008 to me!

There are many stories that are important to certain people and many things that mean more to me than others. But some of the big stories to me are, President-elect Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton named Secretary of State, Crowley County Fire, Olympics, and Gas Prices.

The first I am going to talk about is the President-elect Barack Obama. Everyone had thought that it was going to be a very tight race. But this was to be proven wrong. Obama clearly pulled ahead of John McCain in the electoral votes and the United States of America followed along as well. I was very sad about the decision that had been made and new President. All I can say is I hope he can follow through with the ideas and plans that he has for us.

The second big story to me was Hilary Clinton being named Secretary of State. This was something that I never thought would happen and was quite a surprise. I can’t imagine President-elect Barack Obama wanting to deal with one of his main competitors. But in all this may have been a good strategy move for our future president to make.

One of things that made the most impact around our county and town of Ordway was the fire. It burned down 24 structures in our small town. This fire was bad enough to call off all school and evacuate that whole town. This was definitely not a little thing. You could hear about all the latest news through your TV, this was something that everyone knew about and no one could do anything to stop. It lasted almost two whole days. This is something that we will always remember and also be more cautious when burning little trash fires.

Another big event that was very important was the 2008 Olympic Games. This is something that only comes once every four years and is always looked forward to! I am a huge fan of the Women’s Beach Volleyball. This is something that I can’t ever wait to watch and where the channel always stays. And with Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor taking the Gold, this was a very exciting event for not only these to women but for Americans everywhere!

Gas Prices over the yearsAnd the last thing that was important to me was Gas Prices. We have seen our share of great and horrible prices. There have been dramatic changes in the prices of gas over the years with this year being an all time high. As you can see by the diagram on the left, it shows the sharp rise of price increase. And now as you can tell the prices are dropping back down quite rapidly. This is a great delight to many vehicle drivers!

Car of the Future

This is article talks about how there invisions for the future may turn out to be a money-losing operation, not part of a “sustainable U.S. auto industry” that Obama and members of congress want to create. The car manufactures have not found out a way to produce hybrid and plug-in vehicles cheaply enough to make money off them. GM is planning to introduce the Volt in 2010. They do not know how much this vehicle will cost yet, it will all depend on how much oil prices will be.

I think this is a good idea to keep producing more and more new automotive options. I think it is necessary for gas prices and the well being of our world. But i also believe that many people will still stick with their normal cars. Many people do not care about the money of gas and the well being of our world.

Hillary Clinton Secretary of State

President-elect Barack Obama planned to nominate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as his secretary of state, transforming a once-bitter political rivalry into a high-level strategic and diplomatic partnership. Obama will name the New York senator to his national security team at a news conference in Chicago. They requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly for the transition team. The Clinton pick was an extraordinary gesture of goodwill after a year in which the two rivals competed for the Democratic nomination in a long, bitter primary battle.

This is an older article but as you can tell Hillary is now the Secretary of State. This had been posted on November 30th. I think this may have been a good move by Barck Obama. It could show that he is willing to work and do what is best for the United States eventhough they have had a pretty bitter relationship. But in all he may be a good thing for the United States of America.

How Do I Feel About Bush?

Everyday we read news stories about bad things that Bush has done or is doing. So i’m going to talk about all the good things he has done for the Unites States of America. There has been no attacks since 9/11! He actually took action against those that attacked us, great economy recovery, he stopped partial birth abortion, raised education and teaching standards, and cut taxes across the boards!

Yes i understant that there are things that he could have done better! But there are many things that he has done to really help and protect the United States of America. In all i believe that he had a great term over all and i would love if he could take us through another term!

Big 3 Bailout

Warning of economic distaster, Democrats and Republicans from auto industry states reached a deal Thursday on an alternative package that would temporarily divert money from a fuel-efficiency loan program to cover the Big Three’s immediate costs. But it was unclear whether it could draw enough support to pass.Even if agreement can be reached to consider their plan the Senate was not likely do so until after Thanksgiving.

I really do not have much of an opinion on this issue. The only thing i would say is why doesn’t the government help them with thir desicion? Previously they have just given the money and they could spend it where they please. i think that they should help them out by telling them where to spend their money and what on. This will help the companies not need a bailout again. They just need a little help.

Homeland Security Detects Terrorists

This is a series of sensors and imagers that read your body tempurature, heart rate and respiration for unconscious tells visible to the naked eye. The signals terrorists and criminals may display in advance of an attack. But with this you do not get hooked up to anything like a polygraph test. The sensors do all the work without any actually contact.

I personaly do not like this idea. Because there can always be mistake. Some people could not show any signs of causing harm and all there intensions could be bad. But also there have been people getting away with things with the security we have now. So.. i guess i really do not know if this is a good or bad thing. i do think that it is a good idea but i don’t know if this would be the thing to do?

Obama as President…

Obama has clearly won the race for President. Barack Obama recieved three hundred and sixty-four electoral votes, this put him way ahead of McCain early. And McCain only got ine hundred and sixty-two electoral votes. This made is very hard and pretty much impossible for McCain to catch up in any way. The popular vote was 64,414,843 from Obama. And McCain got 56,735,145 popular votes. There was a quick and clear winner of this election.
I was not very happy when i heard that Obama won. I was also very surprised! I was not expecting and outcome as this. But i hope that not too much damage can come from this. Although i can already see that not much change is going to happen. Obama has already said that change may not be for years to come. He is already not living up to what he has promised. But in all i just hope that we are not doomed as a country and that he can hopefully back up some of the things he has said.

McCains’s views on offshore drilling

According to McCain, significantly lower fuel prices could be achieved in a matter of months, once oil companies received a green light to establish new offshore drilling sites, an estimate he says comes from unidentified oil company executives. This pro-offshore drilling stance is a reversal for McCain, who had been a longtime opponent of offshore drilling until soaring fuel prices turned the idea of increasing domestic oil production into a hot political issue in the 2008 presidential election.

I think that anything that will ower gas prices is ok with me. I believe that this is a great idea and you can tell by this that McCain is concerned about his country. And also about the people in it. I think this shows that he is ready to take on this posistion as president. All in all i believe that the offshore drilling is a great idea.

McCain’s View on Health Care

John McCain believes that we can achieve savings in Medicare without reducing benefits or eligibility. He has proposed common-sense reforms that will not only put Medicare on a path of financial stability but ensure access to quality care for millions of Americans. Some of the policies proposed by the McCain plan include: Promote payment reform that allows us to move away from the current fragmented and volume-based service to a system which rewards coordinated and quality focused care. Eliminate Medicare fraud and abuse to ensure that nearly $60 billion a year, almost 10 percent of total Medicare spending, that goes to line the pocket of criminals instead of providing quality care for seniors. Ensure that drug premiums for the wealthiest Americans are not being subsidized by the middle class. Promote a new generation of treatment models that better manage chronic care conditions while rewarding prevention and wellness. Greater use of Health IT and medical homes to promote greater co-ordination of care. Reduce drug costs by allowing greater use of generics (including bio-generics).

I think that McCain has some very interesting ideas. I believe that he is ready to be in this position of power as President of the United States. I like that he is planning to ensure access to quality care for millions of Americans. I think this is a great idea and shows that he really cares about his fellow Americans.
